— Motor protection —

Motors for continuous operation (operating mode S 1) are normally protected by protective circuit breakers with thermal release. This protection is current-dependent and functions especially with overload as well as with a blocked motor shaft. In individual cases, an undervoltage release as well as a phase-failure protection can also be practical.

Furthermore, motors can be protected by PTC thermistors (PTC sensors) embedded in the winding or temperature switches (thermal contacts / thermostat). This however necessitates extra costs.
IEC 34 - 11 must be taken into consideration.

Motors for intermittent / chopping operation, short-time operation or similar operations (operating modes S 2 - S 9), as well as all motors with separately driven fan and all variable-speed motors should be equipped with PTC thermistors or thermal contacts.

The PTC thermistors correspond to DIN 44081 / 2. They must be operated in connection with a suitable releasing device.

VDE 0631, 3.1.2 applies for the thermal contacts.

Standard for three-phase motors: NC contacts / 220 - 240 V / 1,6 A / 3 pieces in a row (triplet)

Standard for single-phase motors: NC contacts / 220 - 240 V / 9 A/ 2 pieces in a row (twin)

Upon request, a further set of PTC thermistors / thermal contacts can be installed as a prewarning (additional costs). This prewarning is normally effected 10 K below the switch-off temperature.

Attention:
Antifriction bearings, rotors and other mechanical parts are not protected by PTC thermistors / thermal contacts. PTC thermistors / thermal contacts do not guarantee a normal motor lifetime if they operationally frequently switch off when reaching the rated operating temperature.

Other components for the overtemperature protection (PT 100; thermoelements; NTC thermistor; NO contacts etc) which are installed in the winding, can be provided upon request.

— Voltage - frequency - power —

The motors can be manufactured for all standard network conditions.
Special voltage-frequency-conditions for the operation with frequency converters are possible without any problems to a great extent.
Should speeds of more than 3000 min¨¹ result in this case, we recommend to contact us. Higher speeds are possible according to the motor size. With smaller motors (IEC 63-71), the limits are around 30 000 min¨¹.

Power
The powers stated in the data sheets are nominal powers according to VDE 0530 with continuous operation (S 1). The power data apply under the following operating conditions:
installation height: < 1000 m above sea level
ambient temperature: < = 40 degrees Celsius
nominal voltage: +/- 5%
nominal frequency
Deviating operating conditions can be taken into consideration by reducing the load. Guide values for the admissible load depending on the installation height and ambient temperature can be seen in the following table.

Insulating material class B - P = % Pn
Height above sea level Ambient temperature degrees C
(m) 10 20 30 40 50 60

1000 100 100 100 100 87 70
2000 100 100 100 90 75 55
3000 100 100 92 77 60 32
4000 100 95 80 62 37 0

1000 100 100 100 100 90 77
2000 100 100 100 90 77 65
3000 100 100 90 77 65 47
4000 97 87 77 62 45 15

ATTENTION: This table applies to motors of standard design. By adapting the winding and the insulating material class to the respective conditions, considerably better values can partially be attained. The table cannot be applied to single-phase motors, torque motors and reluctance motors.
With motors < 0,5 kW, we recommend to contact us as the standard design of these motors sometimes also has considerable thermal reserves
Due to the otherwise significantly worse power factor, an adaptation to the winding is in any case recommendable with a continuous loading of the motors with a nominal power less than 65%.

Operation of 50 Hz motors with 60 Hz network
Standard three-phase motors manufactured for 50 Hz operation can generally be operated with a 60 Hz network. Two cases must be differentiated:
New operating data in % nominal data:

1. Mains voltage 60 Hz = motor nominal power 50 Hz
Power Speed Torque la/ln Ma/Mn Mk/Mn
100 120 83 83 83 83

Attention! The absolute values for starting current, starting torque and breakdown torque are reduced by approx. 30%.

2. Mains voltage 60 Hz = 1.2 motor nominal power 50 Hz (type DN)
Power Speed Torque la/ln Ma/Mn Mk/Mn
115 120 96 104 104 104

These values are guide values, exact data depend on the type and size. If required, please contact us. With a special winding, the powers of case 2 can also be attained with other mains voltages. Data for other motors can be seen under the respective types of motors.

Insulation and heating
The motors are manufactured with varnished copper wires, insulating materials and impregnating varnishes of renowned manufacturers.

The windings are vacuum impregnated and are correspondingly tropic-proof in everyday usage.

With particularly problematic ambient conditions, the windings can additionally be provided with a special finishing varnish (F 93). With this, an excellent protection against many chemicals, sea water and termites is attained.

Totally enclosed motors of the type DN / EN can be manufactured with cast windings (up to insulation class B). The admissible heating of the windings is, acc. to VDE 0530, depending on the used insulating materials, assigned to the insulating classes.

ISO-cl. E B F H

Overtemperature A 75 80 105 125
B 75 85 110 130
Maximum temperature
degrees C
120 130 155 180

A: normal motors
B: motors < 600 W or without fan with cast windings.

According to the heating during nominal operation, our motors are manufactured according to the insulation classes B or F (refer to technical data of the individual series).
Under normal operating conditions, the windings attain a lifetime of approx. 25000 hours. In order to extend the lifetime or with increased ambient temperatures, a higher insulating material class can be applied (up to ISO cl. H).

Motors without terminal boxes
are manufactured upon request with cable. In this case, it is necessary to state the requested cable length and possibly also the type of cable. PTC thermistors or thermal contacts are generally designed with a separate 2-wire cable. Connections for motor winding and attachment parts such as e.g. separately driven fan, brakes, or similar parts, can be designed with common multiple-wire cables. Special wishes can be taken into consideration if they are possible.
